After long preparations, in collaboration with the Paediatric Clinic and the Centre for Arrhythmia and Cardiac Pacing within the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine of the Sisters of Mercy University Hospital Centre (KBCSM), this year we are starting a paediatric electrophysiology program.
Until now, KBCSM has performed electrophysiology in older children with the consent of a paediatrician, but we have not been able to admit children of all ages. As there is no electrophysiology laboratory in Croatia ready to admit children of all ages, this project was initiated. The whole team received additional training, and paediatric cardiologist Nikola Krmek, M.D. was included. Nikola Krmek, M.D., completed his education under the Paediatric Electrophysiology Program in Budapest, at a renowned Paediatric Electrophysiology Centre in Europe.
For the needs of paediatric electrophysiology, a special “Ensite Precision 3D mapping” system has been installed in our laboratory, which enables us to perform procedures without or with extremely small amounts of X-ray radiation in children, and also with greater precision. This system also allows us to use smaller electrodes that are suitable for children’s age. In this way we are technologically classified among the strongest centres where this type of electrophysiology procedure is available.

At Sisters of Mercy on March 6th, 2018 a paediatric electrophysiology program was initiated in collaboration of the Department for Cardiovascular Medicine and the Paediatric Clinic. With the help of the team of KBSCM’s Centre for Arrhythmia and Cardiac Pacing, the Paediatric Cardiology Department and the Anaesthesiology Department specialists, arrhythmias were successfully ablated in three children (the youngest child of 7 years), using a special mapping system without exposing them to X-ray radiation.
